Was bedeutet es, wenn etwas „modern“ ist?

• Kunst: Man kennt deutlich den Unterschied zwischen den Klassikern und den Modernen (z.B. Picasso).
• Erfindungen: Elektrizität, Telefon, Auto/Flugzeug, Computer, Kamera

„It seems like since Kennedy’s time we’ve been sort of coasting.“

Difference between modern and contemporary:

• „Modern art“ was a reaction to centuries of classical art. Seit es Kameras gibt, muss ein Künstler wirklich nicht mehr naturgetreu malen. Sein “Mehrwert” ist es nun, Emotionen über die Bilder zu transportieren, etwas zu verfremden, wie es eine Kamera nie könnte (vgl. Monet – Impressionismus).
• „Contemporary art“ ist keine Antwort auf irgendwas, keine Gegenbewegung (z.B. zur Kamera).
  • „Contemporary art is the art of the moment, the art of now.“
  • „Contemporary art does not have to push away the work of Rembrandt or Michaelangelo.“ 
  • „Contemporary art is one artist’s statement about what they want to say.“

SG sagt, wir sind gerade mitten in einem Übergang in eine völlig „new era“, welche die Zeit 1960-2000 wirklich „old-fashioned“ aussehen lassen wird: „The revolution, the next one, is happening right now.“

What is going to define this new era?

1. Smartphone: the ubiquity of connection. „As soon as you have cell phones, Romeo and Juliet makes no sense. Neither does any Seinfeld episode.“
   • Informationen sind weltweit synchron zur Verfügung. Es gibt keine Zeitverzögerung. Es ist wurscht, wo du lebst.
   • „For the first time in the history of the world, anyone who wants to learn something can learn it. That is a game changer.“
   • „It’s creating a new standard of what it’s like around here. And ‚around here‘ is no longer just within a hundred miles around my house. ‚Around here‘ is all of us, because for the first time the culture that we are talking about is all of us.“ 
   • „Culture changes faster than ever.“
2. Machine learning and artificial intelligence
   • „One job after another (…) is getting replaced. Replaced by an infinitely trainable, infinitely patient, infinitely cheap system that will do the thing we used to think of as ‚work‘.“
   • Die Jobs, die nicht verschwinden werden: Disruption, leadership, solving interesting problems.
3. We’re replacing the threat of war by a new threat: The warming of the climate, the rising of the sea level.
   • Jeder fünfte Mensch wohnt in einem Küstengebiet.
   • „This is going to dominate the conversation going forward the same way ducking under your desk to avoid a nuclear war dominated the 1960ies.“

Die zentrale Frage: What does this mean?

• Was bedeutet das für mich persönlich?
• Was bedeutet das für meinen Tribe?
• Was bedeutet das für mein Business?
